NCE Grade 7 Social & Modern Studies — our islands and their landforms, heritage and identity, where people live, and people and environment.

Grade 7 opens the NCE with geography doing the explaining. Mauritius, Rodrigues, Agalega and the outer islands are not one place but several, and each has landforms that follow from how and when it rose out of the sea. The questions ask what those landforms decide: where the rain falls, where the soil is deep, and where anyone could reasonably build.

Identity then arrives as a consequence of movement. Who came, from where, and what they carried with them accounts for the languages, faiths and festivals a pupil already lives among. The last chapters close the loop — settlement follows the land, and the land is then altered by the people settled on it.
