NCE Grade 7 English — Free Practice Questions

NCE Grade 7 English practice — the first secondary year: longer texts, grammar named properly, and writing that has to hold a shape.

Grade 7 is the first year of the NCE, and the change a pupil notices first is size. Passages run longer than anything primary set, the line that answers a question sits further from the question itself, and a single tidy paragraph no longer counts as a piece of writing — it has to sit inside something with an opening and an ending.

The grammar half changes in kind rather than in quantity. Until now a pupil could hear that a sentence was wrong; from here they are asked to say which part of it is, and that needs the words for it — determiner, modal, clause — as much as the ear. Naming a fault is what makes it fixable in their own writing rather than only in an exercise.
