Secondary maths opens at Grade 7, and it opens by moving the goalposts twice. Numbers extend below zero, so a subtraction can now finish somewhere a primary pupil never had to go, and indices give a short way of writing a multiplication done over and over. Prime factorisation completes the shift: a number is described by the parts it is built from rather than by the digits it happens to be written with.
Then the letters arrive, and with them the habit the rest of school maths depends on. An expression stands for a quantity nobody has handed over yet, and an equation is a statement about that quantity which has to stay true while both sides are rearranged. Sets and transformations are new descriptive languages of the same kind — one names a collection by its members, the other names a shape by what has been done to it — while length, mass, area, time, speed and money keep the arithmetic tied to something a pupil can picture.

Integer work treats the sign as part of the answer, because the commonest Grade 7 slip is a calculation done correctly and landed on the wrong side of zero.
Algebra questions run in both directions: forming an expression from a described situation, and unpicking an equation someone else has already written.
Every chapter opens into named sub-topics, each carrying a live question count and its own practice button, so ratio can be drilled without touching the geometry.
