Grade 1 Health Education practice — washing and brushing, everyday foods, and staying safe at home, at school and on the road.
Health Education in Grade 1 is about habits before it is about knowledge. Washing hands, brushing teeth, using a handkerchief and keeping nails short are taught as things done at a particular moment — before eating, after the toilet — because a young child remembers an occasion far better than a reason.
Food is handled the same way. The work is sorting what is on the table into what the body needs plenty of and what it needs only a little of, and noticing that what a child drinks counts as a choice too. Safety covers the places a young child actually is: the road outside the school gate, the kitchen, the playground, and knowing which adult to go to when something goes wrong.
