Grade 1 maths practice — counting to 20, addition and subtraction, shapes, patterns, measurement, time, money and ordinal numbers.
At Grade 1 a number is still a quantity a child can see. Counting to 20 is not recitation — it is knowing that seven counters are still seven when you spread them across the table, and that the numeral 7 is a name for that amount rather than a shape to copy. Addition and subtraction are then just putting the counters together and taking some away, written down.
That is why the rest of the year looks so varied. Shapes and space, patterns, measurement, money, ordinal numbers and the daily routine of a school day are all the same skill in different clothes: matching something real to a number, a name or a position, and being able to say which one comes first.
