Grade 1 English practice for children still learning to read — letter sounds, listening, speaking, early writing and first grammar.
Grade 1 English happens almost entirely out loud. A child who cannot yet read a sentence can still follow a spoken instruction, answer a question about a story somebody has just read to them, and say what they did at the weekend in words another person understands. Listening and speaking are the subject at this stage, not a warm-up for it.
Phonics is the bridge to everything that follows. Once a child knows which sound each letter makes, they can blend those sounds into a word nobody has read aloud to them first, and the writing work is that same knowledge running backwards — letters formed the right way round, words spaced apart, a name a child can sign.
