Grade 4 science begins with the distinction everything else is built on: what is alive, what is not, and what test tells you. From there a child works outward to plants and animals, and to the habitats that decide which of them lives where.
The second half is about substances rather than organisms — air, water, and the properties that make one material right for a job and another wrong. These are the chapters where a child is first asked to predict rather than remember, and where conservation arrives as a consequence of what they have just learned about habitats rather than as a separate lesson to memorise.
