Grade 4 is where place value stops being about reading a number and starts being about what happens to it. Once a child knows that the 4 in 3,470 is four hundreds, carrying, borrowing and comparing all follow from the same idea, and the four operations become one topic rather than four.
Fractions arrive in the same year, and they are the first mathematics that contradicts what a child already trusts: a bigger number on the bottom makes a smaller amount. That single reversal is where most Grade 4 mistakes live.

How it is practised
Six chapters, each broken into named sub-topics with their own question count, so a child can practise only the part that is not working.
Questions are written as real situations rather than one sentence with the numbers changed — a template run of identical stems is one question to a child, not forty.
Read-aloud speaks the question and then each option, lettered and highlighted, for a child who cannot yet read the choices unaided.
