Nothing new is announced in Grade 8; what changes is how long a pupil has to keep it going. An argument now has to survive three or four paragraphs without circling back on itself, and a comprehension answer often has to draw on two places in a text at once instead of quoting whichever sentence sits nearest.
Accuracy turns into the dividing line at the same time. A pupil who speaks English easily can still put the wrong preposition after a verb, or reach for a modal that claims more certainty than they mean, and this is the year that difference starts costing marks. Register is the other half of it: the same content written for a friend and for a head teacher is not the same piece of work.

Modals, prepositions and sentence structure are separate chapters with their own sub-topics, because these are exactly the details a confident speaker is most often wrong about.
The four options in a choice question are held to one grammatical shape and a similar length, so nothing can be ruled out on appearance before it has been read.
Read-aloud speaks the stem and then each lettered option, marking the one it is on, which at this grade is most useful for hearing whether a long sentence actually holds together.
