Grade 5 English widens from naming parts of speech to using them. Adjectives and adverbs are the year's new work, and they are the first grammar a child has to choose rather than identify: which word is doing the describing, and where in the sentence it belongs.
Alongside that sit the two skills a paper cannot test by multiple choice alone — comprehension, where the answer is in the passage but not in its words, and creative writing, where a child has to produce the sentence rather than repair one.

How it is practised
Spelling and dictation are practised as their own chapter, because they are the one part of the paper that repetition genuinely fixes.
Comprehension questions are attached to full passages, so a child practises finding an answer in a text rather than in a single sentence.
Read-aloud speaks the question and then each option, lettered and highlighted — this is the grade where reading fluency and the subject being tested are still the same thing.
