Grade 3 is where spelling stops being a matter of hearing a word properly. Sound alone will not tell a child which of the plausible spellings is the accepted one, so phonics widens into patterns and word families — the endings, the silent letters, and the rules that are worth learning as rules even though they carry exceptions.
Texts grow longer in the same year, and length changes what reading asks for. A passage of several paragraphs holds detail a child has to go back and locate rather than hold in their head, and the writing half asks for exactly that produced: sentences that stay on one idea and follow each other in an order a reader can track.
